Distance doesn’t always matter, though I’d love to be a bit closer

This piece stems from a conversation I had this morning with a fellow YAM and how our new roles continue to change us as God works in our life and what that could mean for our futures.

It’s over 11,500 km of physical distance by air
Yet, Can you put a distance on friendship? On shared work & passion?

Pull out a World map get out a ruler & a calculator
Or you could just trust me
Cause I’ve done the math and then learned to just let it be

That map, ruler and calculator, just let it be
The thoughts about how big of a distance it is, just let it be
Different Languages, families of origin or cultures, just let it be
When your past and future seem so different, just let it be

Why just let it be?
Because someone’s got to fight for the rights of all who can’t on their own
For those who give all and leave their countries of home
To try to make a better life for themselves and the families they support

We are called to out the gospel like Jesus did, in transformative ways
So don’t just sit back but don’t hesitate to make some waves

When you learn to let the little things be
You can focus on the things that really matter
Like equal treatment, human rights, and prosecuting those who commit the offense not the victims
The new realities that exist and embracing the change
When you stand out, for your passport country is out of the normal range
It’s the moment’s when the normal used to seem so strange

Then you can go embrace the little things
Get out and learn and make some new friends
Embrace the new cultures and celebrate the differences
Drop the “I” word and take a stand alongside them
Be the different face because you believe in the fight
Don’t hesistate to let the process change you, you’ll be alright

Find support in those who understand
Or at least willing to lend you their hand
Do your own research as you continue to grow
For there is always something more to know

Walk with those who are walking the same way to
Even if there is a physical distance keeping you a part
Know that the journey can happen in your heart

I know I say this a lot but I am so thankful for my class of YAMs and the relationships we have. One of these relationships continues to push me to learn and grow. Its with another YAM who is also working with Migrants (undocumented & documented). The focus of our work similar, the day to day different and the culture we grew up in similar (think south), the cultures we are serving different. Yet in the days when the new realities of my job seem so overwhelming or when the celebrations are ones few people understand she’s been there to listen & to celebrate with me.

So in this crazy road I’m on, I’m thankful to share part of it with someone whose become a Sister in Christ whose passion for the rights of ALL migrants is similar to mine.
